We spoke with certified professional skateboard coach Paulie “Sk8Gramps” Pascual and got his advice on the best beginner skateboarding tricks to learn.

Ollie

For those new to skateboarding, the ollie is the best place to start.

An ollie is essentially a jump without any external force; all you need is your board and your body.

To do an ollie, put one foot on the tail of the board and the other foot in the middle of the board before pushing down with your back foot while simultaneously jumping up into the air with both feet together.

This trick is often seen as one of the foundations for other more advanced tricks like kickflips (see below).

180

The 180 is another great technique for beginners because it helps teach balance and control.

To do this trick you simply turn around while keeping the board connected to your feet by spinning them in one motion.

This trick may take a few attempts but once you are comfortable doing it consistently you can move on to more advanced tricks like pop shuvits (see below).

Kickflip

The kickflip is a great way to practice balance and coordination when learning how to skateboard.

To do this trick, kick up the tail of the board over your body while flipping it in one motion – this may take several attempts but once mastered can be incredibly rewarding!

Certified professional skateboard coach Paulie “Sk8Gramps” Pascual recommends starting with an ollie before progressing onto basic pop shuvits and then progressing onto kickflips which can help anyone become a confident skater quickly.

Other easy tricks include manual, boardslide, feeble grinds as well as kickflips which can help anyone become a confident skater quickly.
